We are a whole person but we have different parts or resource states that take on responsibility for different jobs. For example when we want to show our love, a part comes forward that is responsible for love. When we are in danger a different part comes forward that deals with survival etc, etc. When all our parts are working harmoniously together we have inner calm and the right part comes forward at the right time.
If we have conflicting parts or a part that is doing the wrong job we have inner conflict and will feel unsettled.
I am sure that all of us recognize when making a decision sometimes that one part of us wants to do one thing and another part of us wants to do the opposite. This is when our parts are conflicting.
Faced with certain situations some people get angry when the best thing for them to be is calm. Take road rage for example. Something happens and an out of control angry part takes over. The person can’t can’t help it; it’s just that the wrong part has come forward to deal with the situation.
